Colours

Though I have to admit that the board and the colours look quite nice most colours could have been chosen better in terms of representing the WWI era - and not WWII!

1. Russia
The "Reds" we know from the WWII Axis games did not appear before 1917 when the Bolshevik Revolution broke out. The Tsarist loyal troops were then called the "White Army"! So following this historical background Russia would be white. Yes, WHITE - quite cool when I think about it! A different approach often used in existing A&A games is basing the colour on the colour of the uniforms: This way Russia would be "beige", almost identical to the colour of UK units in the original AAP and AAE.
But again: No red or red-brown - NO WAY!

2. USA
USA introduced the green fighting suit/uniform in the interwar period.
Before, meaning in WWI, it was...brown!
(for better distinction with UK it could be significantly darker!)

3. UK
If you follow the uniform logic UK would get "Khaki"!
Which leads us to...

4. Ottoman Empire
With UK being "freed" of its actual colour the Turks can get it! Give the "Sand Warriors" either that or some kind of "Sand" colour. The uniform looked that way and the battlegrounds mostly consisted of it: SAND! SO give them some kind of sand looking yellow!

5. France
Taking into account that the game starts 1914 AT OUTBREAK the dark blue is perfect! Very soon the French switched to the heaven-blue uniform we all know from many photographs but for this game, it is the way to go!

6. Italy
Well, Italy ought to be green! Simple as that!
Whether it's derived from the green of their flag or the (grey) green of their Arditi troops (which should be represented as dark green for not mixing with the 2 CPs!) just boils down to taste, I would say.

7. Germany AND Austria-Hungary
Easy as well: Grey!
You would say "Both"?
Yes, representing the close bond which was THE major factor for the outbreak of WWI in the first place! Without the "Blankoscheck" maybe there would have been no war!

Of course they do not get the same gray:
Germany gets its famous "field gray" (light gray) and
A-H dark gray!

So, that's it: The colours of WWI - and not WWII!

Hopefully we will see them in a future anniversary or collector's edition!

Why not, a sub game, based on say The Eastern Front, East Africa(colonial troops had different colours), or, Mid-East(Lawrence wore white?), thanks, Pellulo

PS if minis come out, hopefully they get the colours right for the figures.

Your color choices would render the game unplayable to most people
2 nations the same color
And 3 with nearly identical colors (beige, khaki and 'sand')

White should always be reserved for nuetrals

That being said I think 1914 is the 'prettiest' A&A
But I've never been a fan of the japan orange (much prefer the pacific red)
And Russia and Italy are too similar in G40 to my eyes

I hope there is no second edition of WWI. I liken the anniversary, deluxe , 2nd edition, etc, etc to George Lucas releasing version after version of the original Star Wars films.

Colours do need to be clearly separated, yes - you are certainly right there...

However, two nations the same colour? Are you referring to grey - after hearing him explain that one would be dark and the other light?

White for neutrals? The neutrals that do not have or need a colour in the game?
